A COASTAL HOME WITH CHARACTER

Completed in just five days, this Scarborough project was a last-minute styling request with both a tight deadline and a carefully managed budget.
The goal was not to completely transform the house or replace what was already there. Instead, Layer & Luxe worked with the home's existing furniture and character, introducing the right artwork, rugs, bedding, cushions, throws, lighting and decorative details to help the property feel complete, cohesive and ready for its next owners.
THE BRIEF
The client wanted the home to feel modern and coastal while still retaining some of its richer, more antique character.
Being close to Scarborough, there was a natural opportunity to connect the interior back to the coast without turning the house into an obvious “beach theme.”
Most of the main furniture was already in place. What was missing were the layers that make a house feel finished — rugs, bedding, cushions, throws, lighting, artwork and smaller decorative pieces.
With only five days from the start of the project to completion, every choice needed to work quickly, visually and within the available budget.
THE CHALLENGE
The project needed to come together quickly without replacing everything that was already there.
One of the biggest challenges was helping the client see the potential of the finished direction before all of the individual pieces had been brought together.
Rather than redesigning the entire home, the focus became choosing the right additions — pieces that could connect the existing furniture, soften the rooms and help buyers visualise themselves living in the property.
WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE
ARTWORK
One of the clearest moments in the project was seeing the ocean artwork installed.
It immediately became a focal point and helped bring the coastal direction to life without the room needing to work too hard around it. The colour, scale and texture gave the space a stronger identity and helped connect several of the surrounding styling choices.
THE RIGHT PROPORTIONS
The project reinforced how important proportion is when styling a room. The artwork, bedding, lamps, rugs and smaller accessories all needed to feel balanced against the scale of the furniture and the room itself.
Even attractive pieces can feel wrong when the size or placement is slightly off.
REAL LIGHT CHANGES EVERYTHING
Another major lesson was how differently colour behaves in a real interior.
A shade that looks perfect online can appear completely different once it is placed inside a room and seen in natural daylight. Texture also changes as the light moves across it, especially with dimensional artwork.
It reinforced the importance of assessing pieces in the actual space rather than relying entirely on product imagery or artificial lighting.

With the major furniture already established, the final transformation came through layering — artwork, rugs, bedding, lighting, cushions, throws and considered decorative details working together rather than competing with one another.
What stood out most to me during this project was how much the right finishing pieces could change a room without replacing everything inside it.
The ocean artwork was probably the clearest example — once it was in place, it almost instantly gave the room the direction we had been working toward.
It also reminded me not to trust colour completely from a screen. Seeing fabrics, artwork and finishes together in the home's natural light made a huge difference to what stayed, what moved and what needed to change.
